Hi all, first time here- I’m asking and hoping for anyone’s advice for my not-so-working K2000 V3 now. I haven’t played it in about 4yrs or so but before yesterday, it was working flawlessly. The unit will play fine for a period of time but after 10-15mins, the unit will power off then the screen will flicker but the unit is on (floppy drive and fan is running). Then turning it off and on is the same issue and it wont even get to the main screen. Just flashes. What is strange is that sometimes after leaving it alone and off for about an hr, i can turn it on and it works again for a bit only to repeat the issue. Ive looked inside and everything looks to be in order- no bulging capacitors and everything is plugged in tight. I have the floppy drive emulator installed along with the PRam upgrade which also are attached and soldered on. Factory reset multiple times and nothing changes. Very strange and annoying and im not sure what is causing this issue. Thank you for any input and time in helping.
Sounds like a PSU problem.
Have you got the service manual and schematics?
Might be worth putting your meter on the power rails and monitoring the voltage until it powers off.
Thank you for the fast reply! Yanno, I was thinking this as well and just checked the service manual online. After a more closer inspection and more research online, I managed to find another having a similar issue (not exact tho) relating to Power Supply Cap (C202). Looking at mine, the big huge purple one’s head looked a smidge raised. I’m going to try and replace the cap and see if that helps. Mine says it’s a 22000uf 16v cap, but the service manual says to replace that cap with a 33000uf 16v cap. Odd that mine has a lower uf cap, but I dont think upgrading that will hurt since the service manual says 33000uf on it. Thanks again for your time. I’ll see if this works.
Yea, it’ll be fine replacing with higher value.
When you remove this from the board, test it to see if it was indeed shorted.
Also check the resistance of the output rails to see if any others are low.
I found this,
"I heard an unpleasant noise and I found that the track that connects the central pin of the mosfet to the positive of the capacitor C202 was blown. "
Something is causing a cascading failure.
So, good news. It boots! Replaced all three power caps (they were still in spec surprisingly). Same issue. on a whim, i took out my pram expansion board. It boots! It seems this is my issue. Total noob question but is there any suggestions on a Pram expansion board to replace this with? Thanks again for everyone’s help!
Even better news! I reflowed all the legs on my pram board and it’s not booting and recognized
