Hello, Does the JP-8080 have the same infamous capacitor problem as on the JP-8000? I’ve repaired several 8000s with the low volume/distortion due to the SMD capacitors on the main board, and replacing them seems to fix those problems. Though many of those old capacitors leaked and also require trace repairs.

A customer sent me a JP-8080 to preemptively swap the capacitors (no symptoms yet) but I noticed the board is very different. For one, there are 50 capacitors vs the 21 on the JP-8000. I know the JP-8080 came out a couple years after the 8000, so maybe this batch doesn’t have the same problems over time? It will be an expensive endeavor, so I don’t want to do anything unnecessary! Thanks!

Are the caps the same make/model? Might be worth a Google to see if these too have problems.

Otherwise, might still be a good idea to replace, but it is a bit of a chore with 50!

Thanks.. yeah, they’re all pretty generic looking, and no brand names, unfortunately. They’re all measuring pretty bad ESR in circuit, so I might remove a couple just to see how they measure by themselves. When doing the Sound Test in test mode, the waveforms don’t quite look like they should (triangles look square, squares have crossover distortion) and I notice some presets sound like they’re missing content even after a factory reset. But I don’t hear low volume or distortion like I do in JP-8000s with bad capacitors. And that’s a well known issue these days with that model. I’ll report back what happens! Thank you!

XV-5080s have issues with SMD can caps also. It was released in 2000 so they still had a stock of these things.
