Adding sealant to contact strip?

[Roland] [FP-30X] – \Dirty keybed contacts]

I successfully repaired my FP-30X by cleaning the keybed contacts, but in working on it, I was surprised to see just how open to the elements those suckers are. I have dogs, and the inside of my keyboard was full of dog hair and whatnot, and it seems inevitable that crap is gonna get in there. (I know I can and should cover the thing up when not in use, but it’s in use all the time!).

What do y’all think about sealing the edges of the contact strips with… something like vaseline, or maybe silicone something-or-other, or maybe dielectric grease?

This is the part I’m talking about:

I would just run a bead of (whatever) around the edge of these guys and re-seat them.

Thoughts?

Not to be the bearer of bad news but all the things you suggested will ruin your contacts so my advice is to cover your keyboard.

Not a good idea, one of the issues I have seen before is Silicone Grease from the mechanical parts “melting” in warm to hot environments, dripping on the key contact boards below and then running underneath the rubber contact strips causing all sorts of issues. Your Vaseline, or whatever other media you suggest to use, would simply exacerbate the problem. Best to keep that area as dry and clean as possible.

Thanks, that makes sense.
