Hey all! I have a bizzare problem and need help.
so…When pressing the sustain pedal all the way down, and playing notes there is a bad glitch rattling noise that plays that isnt super loud in relation to the volume but very noticeable. BUT heres the thing! it only affects the grand piano voices. So switch to any electronic piano, guitat, synths or whatever and its not present. the noise also doesnt show at low velocities or show as much with the pedal only pressed 75% of the way. what on earth could cause it to only affect the grand piano voices???
Can you record and post a video of the noise? Might help to determine the cause
I took a video but im not sure how to upload it, it doesnt appear to allow any video formats
Might have to upload to YouTube or file sharing location
update: I just ran it through test mode and both ram rom and wave rom came back ok.
As far as I can ascertain from that video that is mechanical noise - just more noticeable on piano voice. I suggest remove the keyframe - remove all the keys and re-grease the fulcrum points and the key guides - use something like ShinEtsu 501 grease
It does sound mechanical i agree, but why wouldnt it be on any of the other voices? its not present at all
You just don’t hear it because with other voices you are masking the mechanical sounds more than with simple piano sounds - my guess that is.
… actually - can you take the top off and have a look inside at the rear of the keyframe - you can see the hammer weights and there are two foam strips, one on top where the hammers hit upon pressing the key(s) and one at the bottom where the hammers land upon releasing the key(s). At times that top foam strip does deteriorate and then falls down causing other fancy issues - I have seen hammer weights getting tangled up in the fallen strips.
Hey sorry for late response, I already have the top off but I havent check for that yet, ill update you soon. Edit: Actually theres no point checking because it happens with headphones too so it cant be mechanical right?
The CVP 98 is capable of mimicking many nuances of a real piano.
Do you have any settings such as:
Soundboard Depth (CVP-98 only)…
Certain piano voices (Grand Piano, Bright Piano, Mellow Piano, and
Mono Piano) feature a special effect which recreates the soundboard
resonance of an actual acoustic piano. A string resonance effect can also
be applied when pressing the damper pedal. This function lets you ad-
just the depth of these effects.
So … if what “sargfowler” suggests may be your issue then this should be visible on the display and can be turned off?!
Get the user manual from here and consult pages 44 and up as well as page 134 and up

UPDATEEEE!!! changing the soundboard depth all the way to zero fixes it. So the advanced sustain method for the grand piano is what causes. Unfortunately it does sound really good though Id love to find out why it is causing that noise:thinking: The system automatically puts it at a value 50 and the loudness of the sound goes up and down in proportion to that number. Even set at 2 you can just barely hear it. EDIT: second problem, the piano doesnt remember my settings after turning it on and off it reverts back to default

I had a Nord Piano 2 a few years back and remember that it had this feature.
Very realistic, but perhaps a little over the top, but wondered whether the CVP-98 had this too!
Well unfortunately it unveiled a new problem but I think i fixed it too. It wasnt remembering my settings when turned off so I replaced the super cap on the DM board, do i need to leave it on for a while to let it charge?
Supercaps charge instantly so it should only take seconds.
Is it still losing settings?
Sorry for late update, apparently the super cap for this is extremely low voltage and after being left on overnight the piano remembered settings
