Emulator II not booting up

thanks for help replacing the burnt out capacitor, that’s fine now, when I turn the emulator on, the lights flash on the top panel and it displays the rev 2.3 info, the drive clicks and then the display seems to generate random characters and the drive stops, the display changes each time i try to start it up and if i press any buttons on the top panel the lights for that button do not come on , any ideas , thanks Ian

If the unit has a Lithium Battery, that might need a replacement. Those are about the size of a U.S. nickel. Also silver, almost all synths, keyboards have one. I believe it’s a 2032 type model # battery that can be purchased almost anyplace that sell batteries. If there’s no Lithium battery in the synth then double check it’s clear fuse is not burnt out. There should be a clear tube with a wire inside it going straight across. If it’s burnt out the wire will look like it’s severed in it’s center and the clear tube will look like a smokey discolored tube. You can find these online at electronic part stores. Also check online to see if there’s a way to factory reset the synth by holding down certain buttons when starting it up. Also, look for a service manual for download on the web. Sometimes when a display screen is displaying odd characters, it actually has a meaning that can be tracked as to what needs to be repaired in the synth. I hope this helps you. Good luck my brother.

thanks for your help, I’ll give them all a try, Ian

I’d check that the power supply is still healthy. When those tantalum caps burn out like that they draw a ton of current and often damage other things. I’d be particularly concerned about the -15 V line from the PSU since C6 was a decoupling capacitor between -15 V and ground. Also check that VR1 near the cap that burnt out is still putting out -5 V.

thank you, I’ll see what a can do, Ian

Bro, there’s a seller on Ebay that has a newly manufactured Auto Switching modern power supply for the E-MU Emulator II as well as the E-MU Emax, Emax II and Emax III. I’m waiting for the Emax II power supply. It’s the complete board that’s plug & play… no soldering involved. Look for it on ebay, it’s not a second hand one, it’s brand new with better components than it’s predecessor. Very inexpensive, like $120.00

I found a seller on ebay that has newly manufactured complete plug & play auto switching E-MU Emax/ Emax II and Emax III power supply boards with all new components. I just bought one for my E-MU Emax II, it will arrive on Monday. He only charges about $120. For it. I would definitely check it out for yourself. No soldering necessary. Hope you find it in the search. P.S. it’s got better components than the original. It’s made specifically for people like you and me.
