Ensoniq MR Rack Distorted

Hello my MR Rack has distorted sounds from both L/R outputs as well as headphone jack. Also, low level buzz. Any suggestions on what parts to start replacing first??
Also, noticed several wire traces on the main board. Looks like it was worked on previously. Also internal battery needs to be replaced. Would that have anything to do with distorted sound?

Thanks in advanced for any recommendations!

I have the same issue with my rack. its in the analog section somewhere. it’s still clear in the headphone outputs, which makes me suspect an op amp that is used to detect a balanced or unbalanced line may be toast. I will be contacting thesoniq.com for repairs on that unit as well as my ASR-XPro, which it’s main outputs have died, but the expansion outputs are still working.
yours must be before the headphone output. and most likely your aux outputs are also distorted, but it would be good to check it they are all the same.
if you had one of those heated air soldering guns - which are used for fixing surface mounted parts, then in the analog section go around and heat and remelt the solder contact points on the op amps. the distortion might be a cold solder joint.

Hi Steve. Thanks for responding to this post on the MR.!!
I need to check the secondary outputs on the MR. I think I first need to go into the system settings to have the aux outputs turned on or something. Right?
Do you know the screen or what I need to do?

When I tested the L/R and headphone outputs they are all distorted, but when I did the secondary outputs I had no sound. So I think I need to turn a setting on somewhere to test their output sound. Again any suggestions would be great.

Also, I have an ASR-X Pro (red one). If you need anything for me to check on that to help with your issue, just let me know.

Thanks!
Mike

Go to sound selection, then enter via parameter button. You can scroll to the fx bus to select where to send the signal. It’s after the dry signal.
Another way is to go into systems and you will find a way to keep them permanently connected, which changes the way it sends sounds out. It in the manual chapter 3 pages 7 through to 10.

Ok. Thank you. I’ll give it a try later today and advise. Much appreciated!!

Thanks Steve for the message. I followed changing to aux output for several sounds unfortunately still have distorted sound and some static. I’m going to open up the unit and take some photos and look for any loose connections/solder joints, etc…

Please see pics of the board. As you can see this main board has been worked over previously with trace wires on both front and back of board.
Any suggestion or recommendations as to the distorted sound from all outputs and headphones??
Or is this module ready to be parted out??

Thanks!

I had very similar issues on 3 of my (very old) synths (crackling, getting quieter, hum and/or a persistent quiet static/fuzz) and in all cases replacing the capacitors solved the issues. Only on one of them the power supply also needed new capacitors. I saw your pictures and I’d recommend sending it off to an electronics repair place and telling them to do that, it doesn’t need to be a synth repair place. Anyhow I’d start with the capacitors.

Thank you. That maybe beyond my technical expertise. I may need a repair shop or someone to mail the board off to.
