The Electribe EMX-1 (Electribe MX) uses SmartMedia and has a few known boot / display / error failure modes, so here’s a short, practical troubleshooting checklist plus what those failure modes usually mean.
Quick checks to try now
Press STOP / CANCEL to clear the message (the manual says most error messages clear this way). ManualsLib
Remove any SmartMedia card and power the unit on again. Faulty or unreadable SmartMedia commonly produces strange errors. If it boots OK with the card removed, try reformatting the card with the EMX (or use another card). ManualsLib
Power-cycle (turn off, wait 30s, turn on). If the display is garbled only sometimes, this can recover it temporarily.
If you still get weird text during startup, try the factory preload (this reloads the factory data): hold Transpose (Solo) + Write while turning the EMX on; the display will say Preload and PLAY will blink — press PLAY to load. This takes ~30s and will overwrite user patterns (back up first if you can). ManualsLib+1
Possible causes (what that odd string likely points to)
Display / firmware corruption — garbled messages often mean the display or the firmware that drives it is struggling. cdn.korg.com
SmartMedia / Card read errors — bad media can interrupt the boot/data routines and show unusual errors. ManualsLib
Power / hardware faults (aged capacitors, blown protective chip/fuse, failing regulator) — EMX/EMX-1 units commonly show blank/garbled displays or fail to fully boot when a small power board/component fails. Users report symptoms like blank screens or “AllFl Ld” after replacing fuses or when power components age. If you see only the backlight or see odd characters, this is a suspect. forum.vintagesynth.com+1
Encoder / control issues — if the unit behaves oddly when you turn knobs or the wheel, the encoder can be dirty/failing and cause strange UI text/behavior. Cleaning or replacing the encoder often fixes it. Reddit
If the quick fixes don’t work
Try the Preload (factory restore) step above (back up first if possible). ManualsLib
Inspect power connector and internal fuse (do not open the unit unless you’re comfortable; if under warranty or unsure, contact service). There are known EMX-1 repair threads about blown fuse chips and blank screens. forum.vintagesynth.com+1
If you’re not comfortable opening it, contact Korg service/support or a local synth tech. Korg’s product/download/support page for the Electribe series is here.
A shop tried for me to replace the KLM-2366. They get an error because my EMX was a Smart Media and the PCB was for SD version. The CPU is programmed for SD or SM version, if you mix the 2366 PCB it won’t work (need to flash the main CPU and KORG do not share the procedure to realize it). I don’t know if it’s your case, but it may help.
I’m looking for KLM-2366. If you know where I can find one … (but not at 400€ :’))
