So various buttons on my MS2000R either don’t work or take a few presses or more pressure to get them to work. Sent it for repair but the shop wanted $650 to replace all the buttons (switches). Could they just be dirty or do they need replacing?
This is the disease of this type of device, after a while, it is better to change the contacts, there are 50 of them, with 2 solders per contact.
These are 6x6x9.5mm 2 pins.
If you have a desoldering pump, a soldering iron, and a little time, it’s worth doing it, I bought the 60 contacts for 11€.
Just wanted to second what Didier had to say. The replacement tacts are cheap and this unit is particularly easy to work on. Try replacing 4 pin tacts on a Virus and you’ll go insane. These 2 pin tacts are quick to remove and replace, even for an amateur.
Oh thanks so much Didier. I am reasonably handy with a soldering iron and have de-soldering braid. I think I saw the contacts for sale here at Syntaur. I’ve also seen an entire board forsale on Reverb.com though it says “Professional Installation Required.”
Thanks Poonx! I replaced the battery on my ESQ-1 recently and it was quite fun. I suppose I can replace just the ones that don’t work, first, then do the others as they fail?
I would replace any known bad ones, any iffy ones, and any you use a lot while you have it open. While it’s easy to work on the MS2000, it’s still a PITA to take it apart. I would def err on replacing too many instead of too few
Depending on the condition of the TAC switches they can usually be washed and lubed. I do it all the time. This should take approximately 3 hours and cost about $300.
Thank you kindly! Weirdly I got the unit back from the repair shop and some of the buttons in question seem to work fine or better than before, and the shop didn’t do anything…
I did my first couple switch projects with braid, but honestly a pump makes it so much better, easier, and faster. For less than half what you were quoted for the work, you could get a top of the line Hakko and be done with the job in 3-4 hours. It was one of my best “stuck at home Covid purchases”
This is very common occurence on many synths and usually the tact switches are still made new. So just replace them all, you will probably never have to do it again
