Korg Prologue 8 repair and extension

Hello,

I get some trouble with my Prologue 8 which sometimes doesn’t want to power up and sometimes works like a charm. I opened it and find out that the PSU design is really questionable. But well, I think to order a new PSU unit. I think that the main condenser may be tired explaining the random power-up or not.
Wondering if someone else got the same issue?

Finally another issue is that when using the type encoder on the left side of the panel, it sometimes shutoff the panel… Another weird issue.

Also while opening it, I saw everything is in place to add two more voices cards

I was wondering if someone tried to add them? It would be awesome to extend it to 16 voices…

Thanks in advance!

Matt

When turning that Type Encoder, does the synth entirely shut off or is it just the panel? In other words, can you still play the keys and hear sound? I’m wondering if the two issues you are having might be related or not.

Either the power supply is faulty or it is possible that the left panel board is faulty. There’s a CPU on that panel board and if it’s having trouble starting up at power on then it may be stopping the rest of the synth from fully booting up. If you’re handy with a multimeter and known electronics safety practices then you can measure the voltage output of the power supply while it’s in the failed boot-up state to confirm if the PSU is the issue or not.

Hello Travis, thanks for your input! I have the feeling that this left panel problem is also related to the PSU issue. It is like if once the synth heated up there is no more problem. For example, after a full night unplugged, it booted properly this morning, I kept it ON for 4 hours, then wasn’t able to have the faulty issue with the panel. But yesterday while testing it from a “cold” starts I got multiple repro, being not really able to make the Prologue work properly. Will try to find out if the audio is still alive next time it happens… I tried few time to look at the PSU output with my multimeter which was showing 15 volts each time…

So, after few more tests, the audio is still playing even when the panel is not functional. Also, the way I can almost each time boot it properly, is to totally unplug it for a day (the PSU is constantly ON with the power cable…). Plug the power cable. Wait 1 minute. Then press ON button. Most of the time it works. This is weird… Don’t know what to do

Hello,
Have you tried removing and reconnecting the connectors several times ?
It could be a bad connection !

sadly, the connector is perfectly solid, it would be too easy!
