Kurzweil K2000 8 keys are playing at full velocity

[Brand] [Model] – [Main symptom]

Kurzweil K2000v2

The main sympton that I am having is that 8 keys in a row in the upper register of the keyboard play at full velocity. The last time I played the synth all was fine. Whats the best thing to do? I am a DIY’r.

thanks

Best taking it apart and checking the contacts, rubber strips and circuit boards for the keybed.

Likely to be corrosion of some sort.

Is there a service manual

Took it apart and is pretty clean inside. Cleaned contacts and circuit which was pretty clean as well. Put back together and same thing. Full velocity on 8 keys.

There is : https://www.synfo.nl/servicemanuals/Kurzweil/KURZWEIL_K2000_K2000R_SERVICE_MANUAL.pdf

Most likely a row or column on the keyboard scanning matrix has failed, hence 8 keys are off.

Thanks for all the responses - I connected the K2000 via midi controller and all the sounds play correctly. Leads me to believe that it’s something mechanical happening between the contacts and pc board. Everything looked clean inside I did notice anything. It’s been sitting in my studio but not plugged in.

That’s a good test to do. The voices/amp is working fine.

Concentrate on the cables/tracks/components on the matrix for keyboard scanning. Test track continuity and inspect cables.

According to the schematic, it’s an 8x8 matrix for the bass and 8x8 for the treble. Check section 5.1.1.2. I think a column on the matrix may be malfunctioning. There are 2 switches for each key. Only one will be working if the scanning isn’t working correctly.

Just a thought, have you checked that the new rubber contact strip has been put in the right way round?

If I remember right, one in each pair of contacts is set higher than the other so that it closes slightly later, and the time delay sets the velocity of the strike. If you put the strip in upside down it would (I think) make the keyboard think every note played was at full velocity…
