Kurzweil Midiboard issue

Hello, I have a Kurzweil midiboard that transmits data from all the buttons and sliders but not from the keys at all. anyone have a service manual or schematic for this Midiboard 3.0?

best regards

George

I just took it all apart and did not see any visible shorts or bad solder joints do the sensor boards run in parallel (if one goes they all go down the line) Also factroy reset the board as well no error codes showing

I found the service manual but it doesn’t give much insight as to why everything functions except for the keys. Any help or suggestions would be great

I’ve had a flick through the manual and I can’t see any reason why they shouldn’t work right out the gate. If you feel adventurous and can safely peek inside I have a feeling the connector beteween the keybed and the boards inside may come loose.

Oh I’ve been all up inside them I’ve looked for bad solder.Joints tested the battery voltage power supply coming in voltages Can’t seem to find anything amiss Tested connectivity between the keyboard and the mainboard cable and its fine I’m getting baffled

have you tried a factory reset? to do so turn the memory protect switch OFF, press SHIFT + TO CASS simultaneously, The screen will display “Enter test or Diag #, press 0, The screen will display “Restore?”, press 1 (one) and it will be back to factory settings.

Another helpful tool within the Midiboard would be the midiscope. To enable this press SHIFT +TO CASS simultaneously, this time press 5, the button presses after this will enter the parameters for the midiscope, Press 0,1,0,1, It’ll then return to play mode.

If the keys are working, play a note, then you will see on the display something like “NO 1 40 124”, the first two digits are Note On, second will be the midi channel the note is sent to which is usually 1 (if it is different then that may be your problem), the third is the note number and the last is velocity.

If no note data is diplayed then there is a physical disconnection between the keybed and the mainboard.

if at any time the display shows “07 ERR” then there is something more seriously wrong with it and it’ll need a “Kurzweil dealer” which in the case of this ageing beauty would most likely be myself or any other Kurzweil knowledgeable tech.

One last diagnostic that is useful would be in section 7 of the manual, press SHIFT+TO CASS then press 1, the display will say “DISPLAY” then go blank. press anything on the device and it will be shown on the display. there is a list of results but you should see a number relating to key pressure. to exit this mode press SHIFT+CANC.

Let me know the results of any of these tests and I will help guide you to a repair if its needed.

Thank you for these suggestions After work I will Run through those tests.

I have 2 midiboards And the one that I can start up and enter the diagnostic tool is the USA made one with a short logic board. Both have eproms with the 3.0 version.

I will hook up the u s one and run the Midiscope test.

It was starting up without errors with no working board Now it starting up with err5

Unless I run the restore command.

I will let you know how things go after work.Thank you again for Take me the time

For the one that boots with ERR5 You’ll want to acknowledge this error by holding the “Shift” button and pressing “2”/“Cancel”, it should display “RESTORE” and you’ll want to press 1 to go ahead with that. Once it has a little think it should boot. when powered cycled it should boot normally, if not then the setup in the midiboard has been lost/corrupted which would mean the battery is toast. Replace and start this procedure again.

The time is no problem  I have many Kurzweil come through my workshop and I think I’m starting to become “the Kurzweil guy”

So I tested the midboard with the err5. After restoring it boots normally until i restart it.

The Diagnostic test passes everything on the front panel and the mod/bender wheel.

still no sign of life from the keys.

i tested the battery level and it reads just above 3volts dc

Hello, on my other MIDIBOARD when I start is up it doesn’t even run through the scrolling number process it just shows a number 8

I test the battery and it does read above 3v

This is a japanese one with the long logic board. And the firmware says it is 3.0 on the eproms. In your opinion what would be the best process of elimination through troubleshooting to find the issue

And i’m very curious , does this look normal in any way shape or form it looks like there is An Burnt spot And what would I test the affected components in that location with
