Modern replacement for 15-pin LCD (why 15?)

Hello. I am no electronics whiz, but I know most old LCDs were 14 pin and modern ones are 16, but the input for 1 and 2 can be duplicated to power the modern ones.

The Yamaha SY-85 has a 15-pin so I am confused how a modern one might be “converted.” Why is there an odd-number? Can we disregard pin 15?
