Roland EP-5: Most keys dead

I have been gifted a Roland EP-5 where my friend mentioned that the unit was working and before he gave it to me, he cleaned the keyboard with a spray to wipe it down.

When I received it, most of keys were dead except for a few of the highest note keys.

I took apart the keyboard to access the membrane where I used IPA to clean the keybed contacts and membrane contacts which did not solve the deak key issue.

I can tell from taking apart the keyboard that it has never been taken apart before and from a superficial look, the keybed PCB looks fine (do not see how it can be stressed to crack as it has never been removed).

Just checking to see if anyone else had a similar issue - really want to save this unit from e-waste to use as my first keyboard to learn piano.

Hi there,

Have a look at the wiring to the keyboard bed too, if blocks of keys do not work or a pattern of keys (like all E/Gs etc) this point to a wiring problem.

Have a look at the service manual Roland EP 5 Digital Piano | SynthXL - Service & Repair Manual
I would certainly be looking around connectors CN3 and CN4 which is the scanning matrix for the keyboard.

Hello D,

I downloaded the service manual - thank you for the links to the manual and the tips!
