Roland SH-1 gate input not working

Hello! I’ve noticed that the gate input on my Roland SH-1 has stopped functioning. However, the CV input still works fine, and the SH-1 operates normally when using the keyboard without an external gate. I’m planning to disassemble the SH-1 enough to access the gate jack and either replace or re-solder it. Does anyone have any tips for diagnosing the cause of this issue? I would appreciate any advice you can give me. Thanks!

It’s hard to say until you open it up and check the state of the input jack.

Make sure the solder joints are good and the contacts clean.

If all looks good, it’s probably time to get the schematics/service notes and trace the input.

The SH1 has a switch that toggles between external CV/Gate and the Keyboard:

Does the keyboard work when the switch is set to “Ext”, but nothing is plugged into the sockets?

if yes, then assumingly your external Gate signal is too weak. It must have 10 Volts. A 5 Volt gate like from many eurorack devices will not work.

If no, then assumingly the contact of this switch that feeds the Gate signal is correded.

Thank you for the tips! I discovered that the gate signal was too weak for the SH-1. I’m currently using a CV.OCD desktop MIDI to CV device, which only outputs 5V gates. They do offer a Gate Boost expander, and I might order one at some point. In the meantime, I’ve managed to boost the CV.OCD gate signal using a Mutable Instruments Ears module before it reaches the SH-1.
