Yamaha P-150 with random audio issue

[Yamaha] [P150] – [random audio]

New member, apologies if I’m breaking any house rules.

I acquired a P-150 on a neighbourhood reuse site, previous owners claimed it “worked fine till last week”. When I got it home it was 90% working: nothing on the display (backlight is on) but all voices worked, all keys worked, sounded fine.

About 30 minutes in, it suddenly just went faulty. I assume the same fault the previous owners had but I wasn’t able to get any details: buttons work intermittently, sometimes they work, other times not. Nothing on the display, though backlight is on. Pressing a key gives no noise. Releasing a key (for about 2/3 of keys) produces a note but of seemingly random pitch, loudness and duration.

I’ve had a quick inspection: no obvious damage/burning, not unusually dusty, no sign of loose connectors. I’ve put out a request to see if I can buy a service manual, but while I’m waiting was wondering if anybody has come across this or any suggestions? I’m kinda leaning towards dismantling the keys to see if there’s something shorting out a bus; thoughts?

If your model isn’t listed: use models–tbd (e.g., models-korg-tbd) and post the exact model in the pinned “Request a new model tag” thread. We’ll add it and retag.
When your issue is fixed, please mark the reply that solved it (click the ✓ “Solution” on that post).

Good move getting a service manual.

Check the voltage rails first to see that they’re in spec.

Give the board a thorough inspection to see if anything looks odd. Hard to do, but there may be a sign.

Yeah, I’m struggling to identify the voltage rails :frowning: I thought, those four thicker wires coming off the main PSU board, gotta be, but there’s only millivolts between the pins, but there’s still functionality there so there can’t be no power. Alas it’s a long time since I moved from electronics to IT.

I checked https://sdl-online.de/dokumentationen/ recommended elsewhere in these forums for a service manual but they have none. Any recommendations for other places I could try? I found one for sale in the US but getting it to Ireland could be a challenge.

Not sure if it’s full details for you to diagnose, but you can at least view the document before downloading (after signing up to a free trial).

Thanks for the link, @sargfowler , I saw that but from what I can see (without paying for membership) it doesn’t seem to bear any particular resemblance to the P150. It does look like a keyboard, but the system board looks very different. Did anybody actually download and confirm?
